2010 Green Light School Fundraiser

A community survey conducted by the SEREG in 2002 indicated that school children are the age group most resistant to changing their energy use behaviour, and women were the sex most reluctant to make changes to their energy-use behaviour. A school fundraiser program was considered a great way to reach both these groups (similar to the well-known chocolate fundraising programs).

The 2010 Green Light School Fundraiser was designed to promote energy saving behaviour to school aged children and their families. A section of the community found to be resistant to changing their energy use behaviour.

The project achieved this objective by engaging 29 schools and one community group across seven Local Government Areas to partner in the delivery of the 2010 Green Light Schools Fundraiser.

Over 9,600 initial information flyers / order forms carrying basic information regarding climate change and the financial and environmental benefits of using Standby Timers Switches, Draught Exclusion Tape and Energy Saving Lighting (LED Downlights and CFL globes) was distributed regionally.

Members of the regional community were invited to support their local school by purchasing a Green Light showbag containing a Standby Timer Switch, Roll of Draught Proofing Tape, an energy saving CFL globe, Energysmart Thermometer and a 4 min Shower Timer along with prompt and novelty items and information encouraging energy smart and resource conserving behaviour.

Half price energy saving 9W LED Downlights (replacements for 50W Halogen Downlights) were also available through the project.

Local schools kept 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale of each bag to put towards sustainability and energy efficiency related initiatives.

Though the project 394 LED Downlights (197 packs of two) and 573 Green Light Showbags were distributed resulting in the abatement of 1,520 TCO2e over the next 5 years.
