Green Light School Fundraiser 2008
A community survey conducted by the SEREG in 2002 indicated that school children are the age group most resistant to changing their energy use behaviour, and women were the sex most reluctant to make changes to their energy use behaviour. A school fundraiser program was considered a great way to reach both these groups (similar to the well-known chocolate fundraising programs).
This Green Light project was initially piloted across SEREG Councils in 2002 and was replicated and expanded in 2003 and 2008.
In total, the Green Light project has helped distribute some 10,000 subsidised compact fluorescent light globes (CFLs) throughout the regional community.
The Green Light Schools Fundraiser:
- Helps raise money for schools
- 50% of CFL/showbag sales are kept by participating schools. Monies raised can be used to help leverage additional funds from the Federal or State government to implement other sustainability initiatives at school, such as installing a solar energy system, a wind turbine, rainwater tanks, or solar hot water systems. - Saves local families money on electricity bills
- each CFL will save the buyer approximately $100 over its lifetime, and - Protects our environment
- by saving energy, conserving natural resources, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
To date, the Green Light Schools Fundraiser has facilitated the distribution of some 10,000 high quality energy-efficient compact fluorescent light globes (CFLs) through 35 local schools and community groups.
In turn, this has helped participating schools and community groups raise approximately $20,000 in total, whilst also helping reduce our region's greenhouse gas emissions by over 4,000 tonnes of equivalent carbon dioxide.
Thanks to recently securing a $40,000 grant from the Sustainable Energy Development Office, syt! will once again be rolling out the Green Light project in 2010. Learn more
