Renewable Energy Demonstration Project
Solar Hybrid Wind Turbine
The Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire has recently commissioned a hybrid wind energy and solar system at the new solar passively designed SJ Community Recreation Centre in Byford.
The solar hybrid wind turbine will provide a 6kW renewable energy system for the Shire's Recreation Centre (1kW PV array and 5kW wind turbine) and the money saved through this will be used to help fund complementary education and other sustainability initiatives implemented through the switch your thinking! programme.
The renewable energy system constructed in Byford is a large scale wind turbine (24m tower) and solar system designed to provide an education function by attracting attention from both the local and regional population. It is also envisaged the project will attract tourists and therefore help reach a broader audience.
The Renewable Energy Demonstration Project will be a functioning example of a system appropriate to rural properties and small industry in the region, at a similar or smaller scale.
It is anticipated that other businesses and households will explore ways of conserving energy or seek sources of renewable energy through observing and engaging with this system, and receiving valuable and practical information on ways of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through renewable energy systems.
It will also be particularly important for increasing the knowledge of new residents in a Shire that is growing well above the state average at 5.2% per year.
Further information on the system and other renewable energy technologies on the market can be viewed at a special display that has been erected in the foyer of the Recreation Centre.
