Renewable Energy Demonstration Project

The 6kW solar hybrid wind turbine at Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre is comprised of a 1kW photovoltaic (PV) array and a 5kW wind turbine.

Money saved through the production of renewable energy is being used to help fund complementary education and other sustainability initiatives implemented through the switch your thinking! program.

The renewable energy system constructed in Byford is a large scale wind turbine (24m tower) and solar system designed to provide an education function by attracting attention from both the local and regional population. It is also envisaged the project will attract tourists and therefore help reach a broader audience.

The Renewable Energy Demonstration Project is a functioning example of a system appropriate to rural properties and small industry in the region, at a similar or smaller scale.

It is anticipated that other businesses and households will explore ways of conserving energy, or consider purchasing and installing renewable energy technology at their homes or businesses, through observing and engaging with this system and receiving practical information on ways of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through the use of renewable energy technology.

It will also be particularly important for increasing the knowledge of new residents in a Shire that is rapidly growing.

Further information on the system and other renewable energy technologies on the market can be viewed at a special display that has been erected in the foyer of the Recreation Centre.
