Gilmore College has recently achieved Waterwise School status and are dedicated water savers. They have fitted low flow taps and tap timers to reduce water use across the school. Water conservation is also embedded into the curriculum including Waterwise lessons on how different cultures value water.

The school has recently established an aquaponics system that combines the benefits of a hydroponics set-up, but also uses the water to grow Silver Perch that can be harvested for eating. The fish provide nutrients back into the garden beds and as Silver Perch are vegetarian, it’s possible to grow the food for the fish, demonstrating the nutrient cycle and an almost closed-loop, waste free system providing fresh produce and fish.
