Thornlie Senior High School has been chosen by the Waste Authority to trial a new $20 000, industrial-sized, electric composter. They are one of only a few schools in WA to be chosen for this prestigious trial which aims to raise awareness of recycling, produce compost the school can use and to reduce landfill. Thornlie Senior High School also hope to sell compost to their local community to help generate income. The machine can take up to five kilograms of organic waste a day, including meat, eggs and bread and turn it into valuable compost. The school intends to feed this machine with organic waste from their canteen and home economics department and in time, from special bins placed around the school that students can use. A great education initiative that will help make a difference.
